THE CHALLENGE
The existence of aliens has long been one of humanity’s greatest mysteries; are they coming to brainwash us, or do we just need better tin-foil hats? In 1968, Edward Condon attempted to evaluate the extraterrestrial threat level for the U.S. Air Force, but his original report was undesigned, dry, and visually unappealing, both for human readers and, humorously, for any aliens intercepting it. The goal was to take a massive, data-heavy government document and transform it into a functional, highly engaging piece of editorial design.
RESEARCH & DESIGN
Evaluating the report meant wrangling a chaotic mix of charts, essays, case studies, diagrams, and historical photography. The solution started with establishing a flexible grid system that could handle every medium. Inspiration drawn from key typefaces was infused into the data diagrams to modify their visual DNA, while photos were treated with a matching tonal filter to give the entire publication a unified, mysterious personality.

THE CONCEPT & AUDIENCE
"Unifying Extraterrestrial DNA." Rather than letting dense government text read like a snooze-fest, this revisualization builds a cohesive graphic language where typography, imagery, and complex data feel like they belong to the same otherworldly universe. Designed for UFO theorists, and design thinkers who appreciate playful editorial systems and a touch of cosmic mystery.
THE TAKEAWAY
Translating a massive, data-dense publication into a 120-page hand-bound book in just six weeks was a true test of endurance and layout discipline. Managing that much content taught me how to build, maintain, and adapt a complex editorial system under tight deadlines, proving that strict structural efficiency still leaves plenty of room to “think like an alien.”
